Do Deer Eat Creeping Phlox? Unveiling the Truth Behind Deer Feeding Habits

Deer may not be the most discerning eaters, but it’s still important to know what they should and shouldn’t consume. Today, we will explore the question: do deer eat creeping phlox?

Do Deer Eat Phlox: Unveiling the Truth

Deer generally tend to avoid eating phlox primarily because they have a highly developed sense of smell. They prefer to steer clear of strongly aromatic flowering plants, phlox included. However, during times of food scarcity, deer may resort to consuming almost any available flowering plant, including phlox. While deer may not completely devour phlox, they often nibble on the blossoms and discard them on the ground.

Dealing with a garden that constantly falls prey to deer can be incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, certain phlox species are more tolerant of deer than others. Several types of creeping phlox, including moss, creeping, and sand phlox, have traits that make them suitable for various garden purposes while also being less desirable to deer.

How to Deter Deer From Eating Phlox

Creating a stunning garden that blooms year after year while keeping hungry deer at bay may seem like a dream. However, it is indeed possible! Incorporate plants that deer find repulsive due to their scent, prickliness, or sap content. By strategically using these plants in your garden, you can deter deer from feasting on popular choices like garden phlox.

Deer and Rabbit Resistance

While deer may not harm moss phlox, be mindful of rabbits. Moss phlox thrives in well-draining, humus-rich soil conditions with moderate moisture levels. Despite its petite stature, moss phlox produces an abundance of beautiful summer blooms in shades of pink, purple, and white.

Is Phlox Ground Cover Deer-Resistant?

Featuring evergreen to semi-evergreen needle-like leaves, creeping phlox is a hardy ground cover that requires minimal maintenance. It is also deer-resistant, salt-tolerant, and trouble-free. Incorporating it into your garden can add both aesthetic appeal and protection from deer.

Phlox may be consumed not only by deer but also by other mammals including white-tailed deer and eastern cottontail rabbits. To prevent these animals from invading your garden, you can use fox urine as a natural repellent. Be careful, though, when applying this method.

Exploring Tall Phlox and Creeping Phlox

While some gardeners have reported instances of deer consuming and damaging their tall phlox (Phlox paniculata/garden phlox), these plants are not entirely impervious to deer damage.

On the other hand, creeping phlox (Phlox subulata), also known as ground phlox or thrift, is a deer-resistant variety that deer often avoid eating. However, some gardeners have shared their personal experiences where deer still fed on Phlox subulata under unfavorable circumstances.

Final Thoughts

In general, deer tend to avoid phlox due to its strong scent. Additionally, the hairy and thorny leaves of phlox plants further deter deer from feeding on them. However, hunger and adverse conditions may occasionally drive deer to consume phlox. Remember to consider these factors when designing a garden and selecting phlox varieties to minimize the chances of deer indulging in their feast.
