When I tried using ceiling paint as primer on my dark green wall, the first coat looked streaky and uneven. I was initially skeptical about how it would look once it dried completely.
However, after several hours, the paint dried smoothly, although some streaks were still visible. Since I had more ceiling paint left, I applied another quick coat to use up the remaining paint. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t bother applying two coats of primer, but in this case, I wanted to empty the paint can. After the second coat dried, the coverage looked much more even and smooth.
When Should You Use Primer?
While ceiling paint can work as a substitute for primer to mask a dark paint color on a wall, it’s important to note that it is not a true stain blocker. Unlike white ceiling paint, primer possesses the remarkable capability to both conceal stains and seal surfaces, while also having the added benefit of masking any unpleasant odors. Skipping the primer step may cause stains to show through your freshly painted wall after a month or so.

For smaller stains, you can get away with painting only the stained area with 2-3 coats of primer. Once the primer dries, it can easily be covered with ceiling paint or any regular paint color.
Save Time and Money with Ceiling Paint
Ceiling paint can be an effective primer when your walls are in good shape. If you’re simply looking to cover a dark paint color, ceiling paint or almost any flat or eggshell white paint will do the trick. Not only does this save you money on primer, but it also allows you to make use of leftover paint cans. It’s a win-win situation!
So, before you embark on your next painting project, consider using ceiling paint as primer. It not only saves you time and money but also helps you declutter your basement by using up those old paint cans. Happy painting!
